The Mayan Calendar, the “Tzolkin” in Maya language (pronounced: ZOL-kin), is the original 'Calendar of The Americas' exactly calibrated to the orbits of the planets Venus and Mars, and to the solar-lunar eclipse cycles of the Sun and Moon.
In 1986, many of my friends wanted to know all about the Mayan Calendar, especially after they heard it being described as the world's most accurate calendar, an ancient Venus calendar that tracks the orbits of Venus and Mars, and predicts the lunar-solar eclipses.
260 days is about 6 days less than the AVERAGE 266 day 9-month womb gestation period for women.
260 + 6 = 266 days = AVERAGE fetus gestation cycle for women.
Usually, my first words of advice for anyone getting started studying the Mayan calendar is: Be open minded about the meanings and titles of the 20 day-signs and the 13 numbers.
For the names and meanings of the 20 day-signs does vary from region-to-region in the areas of Central America where it has been used for thousands of years.
The key words chosen here on this website are to help encourage all the various aspects of discussion and have been evolving as modern research brings new facts to light.
Be sure as you study and draw the 20 day-signs that they do reveal themselves, and sometimes radically different than they may to someone else.
The truth is, according to he-late DR. DAVID R. HAWKINS, the foremost psychologist in the word on spiritual practices: "Everything is imagination."

The real keys at first for me beginning to use the 260-day Mayan Calendar was knowing:
- when the major shift points occur
- when the beginning of each 13-day-week starts
- when weekday 13 occurs every 13 days
- when each 4-day cycle begins and ends, based on the four colors: red-white-blue-yellow
-when the 20-day Months begin and complete
- when the FIVE (5) 52-day time cycles or "rounds" begin and end
- when the Season Days (Sd) occur within each of the FOUR 65-day Seasons: SERPENT-DOG-EAGLE-SUN
So I recommend starting with tracking these cycles first, as you begin understanding the meanings of the 20 day-signs.
For years, only four old original Mayan calendar book-codices were known to exist and they all highlight only the weekday 1 day-sign and the weekday 13 day-sign for each 13-day week. After 30 years of research I now think this points to a "zero-point doorway" that "opens" every13 days, "between" weekdays 13 and 1.
The 20 day-signs you see here on this website I drew on a computer in 1998 and are the best examples I could find after studying hundreds of original drawings in various Mayan codices and texts.
A special thanks goes to Jerry Trutwin in Minnesota who has cataloged hundreds of examples he shared with me.
I then created my own version of them using the most common features "drawn" on a computer using sacred geometry on a 3:5 ratio grid with pi spiral pattern parameters.
The 9-month Calendar of the Americas, the 260-day Mayan calendar, is considered "sacred."
The ancient Maya and Aztec cultures produced fabulous artistic expressions of the Hoop of Life, the Spirit Wheel in motion, ascending and descending souls and their spirit guides, moving up and down thru all the various karmic levels of heavens and hells, bliss and dispair.
These ancient Central American cultures also developed their own 365-day "solar" seasonal planting 'sun calendar' composed of eighteen months, with 20 days in each month plus an "extra" five days at the end of the solar year.
The sacred inner planetary based 260-day calendar symbolizes the Universal cosmic birth cycle as it unfolds itself, tracking the exact orbits of the inner planets Venus and Mars, and the solar-lunar eclipses of the Sun and the Moon.
I, myself, am not initiated, nor desire to be, to teach any Mayan or Aztec "religion" old or new.
My research presented here now on this website was first inspired by the-late DR. JOSE ARGULLES and his books; especially, The Mayan Factor: Path Beyond Technology.
The northern Arizona city of Sedona is the spiritual center of the southwestern United States for native American nations. For Sedona sits in canyon valleys on the edge of the huge rim cliffs of the immense Colorado Plateau that covers four US states.
Sedona is located 90-minutes north of Phoenix, 40-minutes south of Flagstaff and 3-hours south of the Hopi nation. The 260-day calendar is the sacred calendar of the Hopi people.
The Hopi villages on "The Mesas" are the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the continental United States.
In 2000 I was told by Hopi woman in charge of their traveling dancers team while dtiving them home after a New Year 2000 performance that indeed the Hopi use the 260-day count.

The ancient 260-day Mayan calendar is the most accurate calendar in the world.
The Mayan calendar system exactly tracks the orbits of both Venus and Mars, and the lunar-solar eclipses.
For the Maya know the secret timing to the Great Lights in the sky.
The 260-day Mayan Calendar is composed of twenty-13-day-WEEKS.
One complete Mayan Calendar cycle is: 20 x 13-days = 260 total days.
The 260-days are composed of TWENTY weeks of 13 days each.
The Mayan calendar 20 day-signs form the Mayan 20-dayMONTH.
The 260 days are a "hero journey" through all possible combinations of the 20 day-signs and the 13 numbers.
For the 260-day cycle is about six days short of the 266-day 9-month AVERAGE gestation birth cycle of women.
A series of four 13-day weeks together create a "bundle" or "House" of 52 days.
FIVE (5) of these 52-day bundles together make the "sacred Round" of 260 days.
13 days x 4 weeks = 52 days
52 days x 5 = 260 days
The Mayan Calendar is also sectioned into FOUR 65-day "Seasons". 65 day x 4 = 260 days
Recent studies on habit breaking and habit forming behavior have revealed that it takes at least a minimum of 18 days for a new behavior to begin to feel comfortable (a Mayan 20-day Month) and on average 66 days for a new behavior to be fully integrated and set (a Mayan 65-day Season).
Read about that study here... http://www.spring.org.uk/2009/09/how-long-to-form-a-habit.php
This is how the 13 Mayan 20-day Months and four 65-day Seasons can help us use these natural time patterns.
The 20 day-signs signify the 20 days of each Mayan Month, and there are 13 months.
For the Mayan calendar has four Seasons of 65 days each:
red SERPENT chikchan Season
white DOG ok Season
blue EAGLE men Season
yellow SUN ajaw Season

*Note: All Mayan Calendar dates on this website are from the exact proven accurate calendar of the Guatemala highlands Maya "count of days" used today by the oldest Mayan communities. The other calendar count of days known as the Yucatan lowlands Mayan Calendar count, used by the-late DR. JOSÉ ARGÙELLES,is miscounted by 57 days as of 2020. The Yucatan lowlands count of days miscount began hundreds of years ago and is no longer aligned with the rising and setting cycles of the planet Venus, which is what the Mayan Calendar is suoosed to be based upon. This split can be traced back into the 1500's with the arrival of the "divide & conquer" Spanish Armada in 1519.
